The inaugural computer-based administration of the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) took place successfully on Saturday, August 10. More than 4,000 candidates took the MPRE at Pearson VUE testing centers across the country. Nearly 13,000 additional candidates took the paper-based MPRE at testing centers administered by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). A lot of effort went into making the experience for candidates seamless, and responses to our post-exam survey from candidates who took the computer-based MPRE were generally positive.

In November 2019, up to 5,000 MPRE candidates will take the computer-based exam at Pearson VUE testing centers. (Candidates who were selected to take the computer-based exam in August and subsequently registered for the November 2019 MPRE were assigned to take the computer-based exam in November.) Beginning with the March 2020 administration, all MPRE candidates will take the computer-based exam at Pearson VUE testing centers.

In preparation for 2020, a new test accommodations process has been implemented. Candidates must now apply for accommodations prior to registering and scheduling a test appointment. Information about the new accommodations process is available on the NCBE website at www.ncbex.org/exams/mpre/ada-accommodations/.

NCBE made the choice to transition the MPRE from paper-based testing to computer-based testing for a number of reasons, including enhanced test security, more uniform testing conditions, and improved data to support future test development. The MPRE will continue to be given three times a year, but each administration will be extended over two days in the spring, summer, and fall. Testing center locations and capacity will determine whether one or both days are available for scheduling for each administration. Candidates will be able to select a test time when they schedule their MPRE appointment with Pearson VUE (it is to their advantage to do so as early as possible to maximize the locations and times available to them). Additionally, for a nominal fee, candidates will be able to reschedule with Pearson VUE for a different time or day during the same administration. They will also receive a partial refund of their test fee if they need to cancel a test appointment.
