MADISON, WISCONSIN, April 13, 2022—The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE), a key admission requirement for most new US attorneys, will be offered at a testing site in Puerto Rico at each administration of the MPRE starting with the August 2022 exam.

The MPRE, developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), is a two-hour, 60-question, multiple-choice examination that is administered three times per year at Pearson VUE testing centers across the US, including locations in Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. The purpose of the MPRE is to measure candidates’ knowledge and understanding of established standards related to the professional conduct of lawyers. It is required for admission to the bars of all but two US jurisdictions (Wisconsin and Puerto Rico); Connecticut and New Jersey also accept successful completion of a law school course on professional responsibility in lieu of a passing score on the MPRE.

“Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court does not require passage of the MPRE for admission to its bar, but law graduates in Puerto Rico may plan to apply for admission to the bars of other US jurisdictions,” said Beth Hill, NCBE Director of Test Development, Operations & Security. “This change will allow those candidates to sit for the MPRE locally, rather than having to travel to another jurisdiction to test.”

Examinees who wish to sit for the MPRE in Puerto Rico can learn more about how to register for the exam at https://www.ncbex.org/exams/mpre/registration/. The deadline to register for the August 2022 MPRE is June 9, 2022, and for the November 2022 MPRE is September 14, 2022.
